How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home? A Room-by-Room Guide

Most homes look clean on the surface long before they actually are. Weekly dusting and vacuuming keep the visible mess away, but grease behind the stove, mildew in grout lines, and dust inside vents build up quietly in the background. That's the gap deep cleaning is meant to close.

The General Rule

Most cleaning experts recommend a full deep clean two to four times a year — roughly once per season. Where you land in that range depends on your household:

  • A small apartment with no pets and light foot traffic can often get by on two deep cleans a year.
  • A family home with kids, pets, or both usually needs one every quarter, since dirt, dander, and germs accumulate faster.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms are the exception — both should get deep-cleaned attention every 3 to 6 months regardless of household size, since grease buildup and bacteria growth don't wait for a seasonal schedule.

Room-by-Room Breakdown

Kitchen. Behind and underneath appliances, inside the oven, exhaust hood filters, and the inside of the refrigerator all fall outside a normal weekly wipe-down. Grease attracts dust, and together they're one of the main things that make a kitchen smell "off" even when the counters are clean.

Bathrooms. Grout lines, behind the toilet, exhaust fans, and shower tracks are where mold and mildew take hold first. In humid New England summers, this can move faster than people expect.

Bedrooms & living areas. Baseboards, blinds, ceiling fans, and behind/under furniture collect dust that a regular vacuum pass skips entirely. If anyone in the house has allergies, this is usually the room that matters most.

Carpets & upholstery. These trap allergens deeper than surface cleaning can reach — see our carpet & upholstery cleaning guide for what a proper extraction clean involves.

Signs It's Time, Even Off-Schedule

  • Dust resettles within a day or two of a normal cleaning
  • A musty smell that doesn't go away with surface cleaning
  • Visible buildup in grout, vents, or behind appliances
  • Anyone in the home developing allergy symptoms that ease up when away from the house

Building It Into a Routine

The easiest way to stay on top of it without thinking about it is to pair a deep clean with a recurring maintenance plan — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly visits handle the day-to-day, while a seasonal deep clean resets everything else. That's exactly how we structure residential cleaning plans for clients across MA & NH.

If it's been more than six months since your last deep clean — or you're honestly not sure — that's usually the clearest sign it's due.
